You are invited to Join Hands for Pollinators on Saturday, May 7, 2022 in Joraan’s Orchard at Prairie Horizons Farm, or wherever you are! Get to know the pollinators around you, where they live and what we can do to help them thrive so that future generations who depend on them for food can thrive too.
… and WAKE UP JORAAN’S ORCHARD!
Each spring, on the first Saturday in May, we host a free public event to “wake up” Joraan’s orchard and prepare for the coming season. We hope you will join us for an enjoyable day of community, good food, reflection and celebration.
May 7, 2022 will mark our 13th annual Wake Up Joraan’s Orchard. Joraan Forbord loved fruit and was a community-minded person with a simple, yet lofty goal: Grow enough delicious fruits to share with others. Joraan’s birthday is May 7, 1987. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 22. The orchard he started is now his legacy, and community gatherings are in true Joraan style…he loved it when people got together to enjoy each other’s company and have a meal together.
WHY Join Hands for Pollinators? On May 7, 2016, as we gathered to Wake Up Joraan’s Orchard, a pesticide sprayer arrived, as well – uninvited and unable to be persuaded otherwise. The strong, gusty wind that day blew this unwanted spray in the direction of the orchard and the people gathered there. Now, each spring, we join hands in solidarity and learn more about how to protect our pollinators, ourselves, our children and our future.
If you don’t have enough reasons to visit us this season, come for the GOATS! Our 17 goats help us manage Native prairie, pastures and woodlots without toxic chemicals.
Our mission is to build a farm-based system of healthy food production, processing and distribution that is economically sound, environmentally responsible and beneficial to future generations.
